President Donald Trump blasted Obama on Thursday for a $400-million subsidy to steelworkers, saying that the president was a liar.
Trump’s comments came a day after Obama defended the $400 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the steel industry, saying it’s important that the steel workers get the money they need.
“If we’re going to have a robust economy, we’re not going to let anyone who’s not making a profit in this country take advantage of the American workers,” Obama said.
“And if they’re not making profits, they shouldn’t be getting the subsidies that we’re providing to them.”
Trump had earlier criticized the subsidies, arguing that they are “subsidies for the very people that are destroying our country.”
“We should have the government step in, take the steel out of the furnace, and put it into the tank.
We should do that.
But we don’t, and that’s why I’m saying that we have to have steel workers put in steel tanks, and then they can get steel,” Trump said at the National Steelworkers Association convention in Cleveland.”
They’re going through a steel crisis right now, and they don’t have the money to pay their bills, and it’s really bad for our country.
You have to help them,” he added.
The president has previously said he wants to get the federal government out of subsidizing the steel sector.
Trump, who has said he would like to end the steel subsidies, has also proposed to end support for energy companies like coal, which he said cost American workers their jobs.
